Georgia Rocks County Resource Page for DeKalb County

This site is under construction - not pretty, but you can try out a sampling of what a county resource page will provide.

Guide to rock and mineral types

This section will have text describing how to recognize the most common rock and mineral types, as well as a set of pictures for each rock type like those shown in this PDF file (1.2 MB).

Geologic map

This will consist of a map, generally derived from the larger scale state geologic map, with a legend of the rock types and rock units of your county.

Google Maps with geologic feature markers

This link brings up Google Maps in your browser, with tags of geologic features such as outcrops.  Click on the "Falling Rocks" marker, and a description balloon is shown.  These balloons will eventually contain description of the rock types at the geologic feature, any cautions about access, and links to any pictures in the photo gallery.

Google Earth overlay

This combines the Geologic map with the feature markers in the context of Google Earth, which can be obtained as a free download.  The geologic map appears as a transparent overlay, making it easy to determine the rock unit that geologists have mapped at any given location.  The feature markers will contain information and links as described under "Google Maps."  Also, double clicking on a marker's name on the list to the left of the satellite view will zoom in on the marker at a particular angle of view.
